The First World War

Lasting 4 devastating years, the First World War (WWI) saw the most rapid development of warfare ever seen. While the trenches rightfully remain the most prominent feature associated with WWI, combined arms warfare rapidly developed in response to the challenges presented by them. The machine gun, the tank, the aeroplane, and indirect-fire artillery all cemented their place in warfare during this war. They remain in importance even today, over 100 years later.
